Location

Gili Trawangan is perfectly situated between Bali and Lombok in Indonesia. Gili Trawangan is a tiny coral-fringed paradise, surrounded by white sand beaches and an array of stunning reef fish. The largest of the three Gili Islands, Trawangan offers a beautiful balance of activity and tranquility and is the perfect place to embrace the simple life.  With beautiful beaches, warm tropical water and abundant marine life, Gili T is an idyllic spot to freedive and practice yoga whether you are learning or training.

Gili T is small enough that there is no need for motorized vehicles! Local transport is by foot, bicycle or cidomo (local horse cart) which is a delightful relief from modern life and the traffic in Bali. The main "road" that runs around the island is about 7 km and takes an hour and a half to walk around.  You can fill your days with the island's many activities like freediving, yoga, scuba diving, cycling, horse back riding, swimming, snorkeling, sun bathing, partying and relaxing. Trawangan is graced with amazing views of a striking sunrise over Gunung Rinjani, the volcano on Lombok and a breath taking sunset over Bali's sacred volcano, Gunung Agung.

Gili Trawangan caters to all budgets from backpacker to luxury traveller.  Accommodation ranges from simple, local style bungalows to secluded, private villas. You can opt to stay in the center of things, close to night life, restaurants and dive shops, or you can chose to relax and refresh on the quieter side of the island.

Gili T is an eco friendly island dedicated to conservation programs and education to increase environmental awareness and maintain the charm of the paradise island we know and love. If you are interested in getting involved in any of the Gili Eco Trust's projects while you are here there are plenty of ways to help from beach clean ups to volunteering at the local school.

Freedive Gili Instructors

mike_board_freediver_instructor
Mike Board (UK) - Mike first visited Gili Trawangan in 2001 whilst traveling as a scuba instructor and instantly fell in love with its crystal clear waters, great diving and the relaxed beach lifestyle.  In 2008 Mike returned to Gili Trawangan to again teach scuba diving but instead found that Freediving became a passion so chose to open a Freediving and Yoga centre, the first in the region, which opened in 2009.

Mike has a strong background in teaching and instruction as a PADI Scuba Diving instructor, a TDI Technical Diving Instructor and as a former Royal Marine Commando trainer. As a Freediving Instructor he is an SSI Level 3 Instructor and an Apnea Total Master Instructor. He has a strong physical approach to his own training, however through Freediving he has discovered that equally important is the balance achieved through activities such as yoga and gaining greater self awareness and mental focus. Both approaches feature strongly in his teaching style.

As an instructor he believes that you should be able to do what you teach and so regularly strives to discover his own limits and extend them, through competing in Freediving and the training that goes with it. As a member of the 2011 British Freediving Team  (www.britishfreediving.org) he has dived to 91m and has set four British National records, currently holding the Free Immersion record at 83m. Through competing in international competitions, discussing techniques with other athletes, and being coached by great Freedivers such as multiple World Record holder Sara Campbell, he aims to ensure that his teaching is always up to date and using the best methodology.

As part of the Freedive Gili team Mike teaches courses weekly throughout the year (when not away competing!) and is keen to share his passion for Freediving with you.

Kate Middleton (NZ)Kate Middleton Freedive Gili and Gili Yoga yoga and freediving Instructor

Originally from Vancouver Island, Canada, Kate grew up in nature surrounded by the Ocean. Her love for the outdoors naturally evolved to the underwater world and led to her becoming a Scuba Diving Instructor. But, as a dedicated yogi, Kate naturally tended towards exploring the ocean and her Self as organically as possible, which meant trading in a Scuba tank for long fins!  Kate practiced yoga for 10 years before trying her first breath-hold and immediately fell in love with the symbiotic relationship offered with yoga and freediving.  Kate’s teaching style is an energetic, creative and full-spectrum approach to embodying your fluid nature. Whether on the yoga mat or underwater, Kate encourages you to use the breath as a navigating source of conscious living, reconnecting to the system and source as a whole.

Kate sees competition is the perfect vehicle to exploring your potential and came first overall in the recent South East Asia Breathless competition. Kate has been teaching yoga for 5 years and freediving since 2009. Along with teaching SSI and AIDA freediving courses, Kate runs Freediving and Yoga retreats at Freedive Gili.
